The one with the "i" has an injection fuel system' where petrol is injected into the engine when its needed. Unless I am totally mistaken.

Pilotx added 22/02/08 - Don't believe this is correct actually - The E36 line up had a 316e and a 316i model for a while in the UK. The 'e' model was only available in the 4d saloon and was mechanically the same as the 'i' model. The difference was the specification of the car as standard; The 'e' version was the most basic of all the E36 models with, I think, manual wind windows front and back - I can't remember what else it didn't have, maybe no central locking/abs? The 'i' model was pretty basic anyway, the SE improved things slightly with alloys, front fogs etc. Most other items were extras on all models except specials and of course M3. I am making the assumption that E316 is the same as 316e though. If not, then I have no idea what an E316 is! I tried though..... ;-)
