The owner's manual for the 1973 Beetle recommends a MINIMUM of 91 octane gas. So if your gas station is like mine, that means you have to put in the "expensive stuff". Of course, your beetle will run okay with the "cheap stuff", but if you go against what's recommended, you can decrease the life of your engine.

It is very important to use 93octain. This is for all early VW air cooled engines. The higher the octane the cleaner the burn. I blew an engine with the cheep gas once and never again.
unleaded gasoline. 87 octane or the lowest grade.
yes, its should work in a '73
This is listed in your owner's manual. For my 2001 VW Beetle, I use ethanol, and it seems to run just fine

You need to use premium fuel
5w-30. The factory and most dealers use Castrol. I use Castrol Syntec Blend partial synthetic.
I have a 73 Super Beetle restored with a 1600 engine. Two questions. What is the best grade of Gasoline to use? Can you use Mobile One Oil? Thanks. Perry
No. 1971 and 1972 Supers used different body parts than 1973 thru 1975 Supers.
I have the same car and I recently discovered Premium Unleaded gas is what I am supposed to use. It says it on the inside of the flap where you put the gas in.
The type I Beetle engine was used in the VW bus (with slight mods) from 1950 to 1971. In 1972, the bus received the new type IV engine, although certain counrties continued to use the type I Beetle motor. So yes. Check your flywheel to ensure it is the correct one.
Gasoline. I know, this sounds a little flippant...but I remember being almost out of gas on payday and COMPLETELY out of money--so I put the gas for the weedeater (which had two-stroke oil mixed into it) in my car and drove to work. It smoked some, but for some strange reason the car ran better after I did it. Of course, when I got home the first question was "where's all the gas for the weedeater?" but it got me to work so I'm not complaining. Use regular gasoline in your 1971 VW beetle.
what gas do you use.
