AS41 is the metal the crankcase is made from. It was used in engines up to 1975--when they changed to fuel injection.
AS41 means the crankcase is made out of magnesium. They all are. You need to get the engine serial number from under the generator or alternator (on the base of the stand) to determine the year and original size.
the AS engine could be from a number of years I'm afraid- it's a 1600 from August 1973 to the end of production- 1979 i think.AnswerAS41 isn't an engine number. It's the magnesium alloy your engine case was cast from. Volkswagen changed to the improved AS21 alloy in 1975--it was introduced when VW put fuel injection on the Bug engine. So...if you've got an AS41 case, it could have come out of just about any year car.
1971
to find the year, you need to know the letters prior to the number
1600cc from Model Year 1971 - www.lennysvw.com
This would be model year 1963.
F0 1966/67 1300cc
HO 1966/67 1500cc
F0 1966/67 1300cc
H5 1968/69 1500cc
From August 1971, this engine was used in California delivered cars. Had to do with emmisions.
you need to have the letters that come before the numbers to find that info
