I've got an H reg vw polo and the release catch is on the left hand side below the glove compartment , about at knee height.
Pull it fairly hard and then open bonnet by releasing the safety catch at the front of the bonnet( bit fiddly first time, might need to use torch to get familiar with mechanism
To manually release the bonnet catch of a VW Polo, first, locate the release lever inside the car, usually found near the driver's side footwell. Pull the lever to release the initial catch. If the bonnet doesn't pop open, you can access the catch from the front grille by reaching through the gap or using a thin tool to push the latch upwards. Once the latch is disengaged, you can lift the bonnet.

To replace the bonnet release cable on a 1997 VW Sharan, first, open the bonnet and locate the release mechanism. Disconnect the old cable by unscrewing any fasteners holding it in place and then removing it from the latch. Feed the new cable through the same path, ensuring it is routed correctly, and reattach it to the latch and the release lever inside the vehicle. Finally, test the release mechanism to ensure it functions properly.
