The cabin air filter is behind the glove box but you do not remove the glove box to replace it. Remove the kick panel under the glove box by removing two screws (torx 25) and removing the panel. Under it is a black panel with 4 screws in it, again torx 25. Remove the four screws and the panel. The cabin air filter will be one of two types. One about 3/4 inch thick towards the rear or one about 1 and 1/2 inch thick towards the front. The filter is removed by pulling it straight down toward the floor. Only one filter should be installed. The thin one if for cars without IAQS or Interior Air Quality System and the thicker filter for cars with IAQS. To tell which your car should have look at the Air Conditioning Recirc switch on the Climate control panel. Cars with IAQS will have two leds on the Recirc button and cars without will have one.

The cabin air filter of a 2004 Volvo s40 is located behind the glove compartment. To install a new filter simply remove the glove box and the filter can easily be replaced.

I own a 2001 Volvo v40 and the interior cabin filter is on the passenger side under the dash. Where the passengers feet would be. There was one cover I had to unscrew & remove and then the filter was exposed. Good Luck!

To change the cabin air filter on a 2008 Volvo XC70, first locate the filter compartment behind the glove box. Open the glove box and gently remove it by releasing the stops on either side. Once the glove box is out, you'll see the cabin air filter cover; unclip it and remove the old filter. Insert the new filter in the same orientation as the old one, reattach the cover, and replace the glove box.
I have not done it yet, but I have been told by more than one Volvo Dealership that it requires removing the gas pedal to get to the cabin air filter (it's apparently on the driver's side). Good luck!
