I just had the thermostat housing replaced on my 99 Jetta VR6. It's on the right (driver's) side of the engine block. The battery and battery tray should be removed to get access to the thermostat.
The 2001 Mitsubishi Gallant thermostat is located inside of the thermostat housing. You can follow the bottom radiator hose directly to the thermostat housing.

Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. The hose is attached to the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing to expose the thermostat.
The thermostat on a 2001 Lexus RX300 is replaced by removing the upper radiator hose and unbolting the thermostat housing. The thermostat can then be removed, a new gasket installed, and the replacement thermostat placed in the housing.

Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine and at that junction is the thermostat housing.
The thermostat is under the housing where the lower radiator hose attaches to the engine.
Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine and it will lead you right to the housing of the thermostat
