Your headlight control knob (the round one you twist on the dash board) is set to auto, or manual. I forget which setting won't allow you to "click" on the high beams with the left indicator lever. It only took me 4 years owning one before I figured that out. Its in the owners manual too.

Ray's Answer- - You also have to have your lights turned on on the car so the high lights come on!!!!

What is a inhibitor switch on a Volvo 740?

An inhibitor switch on a Volvo 740 is a safety device that prevents the engine from starting unless the transmission is in the "Park" or "Neutral" position. It serves to ensure that the vehicle doesn't accidentally start while in gear, which could lead to unintended movement. This switch is typically part of the automatic transmission system and plays a crucial role in vehicle safety. If the inhibitor switch malfunctions, it may cause starting issues or prevent the engine from starting altogether.
