It needs a new part. Among the parts it could need are the battery, the alternator, the voltage regulator and any one of about thirty wires. The part it probably IS, is the battery. We know this because the engine won't start on its own battery but will run if started on someone else's battery.

Oh yeah...VW alternators are kinda delicate. If you jump start a car with one in it, leave the car you're jumping from turned off.

There are only about 5or 6 wires in the starting system but some are very long so the connections have to be good. The first thing to do is check the battery terminals for being clean and tight, water in the battery and charged , and chech all wires on the starter. You can get your battery checked at any automotive store for it's power.

How do you get 2004 vw beetle started when out of gas?

I have found that on the diesel once you put fuel in the tank, you then have to put fuel in the fuel filter on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Once you do that then you can try to start the beetle. once it starts after a few tries you might want to open the drain cock on the bottom of the fuel filter to get all the air out of the line. This is how I did it. and it work for me.

What could be the problem if your 1999 beetle won't start?

My 1999 beetle will not start, but the problem is intermittent. I've had it in the shop and they can't find anything wrong with anything; they were able to start after keeping the key turned over for quite some time; now is starts the first time you try. This happens from time to time and is frustrating.
