I've seen this on P38's where the temp gauge rises when A.C is turned on. It was due to a short on the earth wire (attached to the body under engine) - temp was not actually rising, just giving a false reading. From memory the gauge rose further (into the red) if lights were also switched on - further load on the system. Hope this helps.
