Parachuting and skydiving are considered statistically to be pretty safe. It is rare for a skydiver to die due to a malfunction of a main and reserve parachute (every skydiver carries a reserve).

So the dangers:

  • Main and reserve parachutes malfunctioning - there are only a handful of these ever having happened in 60 years of the modern sport.
  • Landing awkwardly leading to twisted or broken ankles.

Do not try to think how dangerous parachuting is, but how much fun can be had participating in it. The human body was never designed to fall at 120mph, so when you take part in a group formation skydive with a 4-way jump, its a massive adrenaline buzz.

I would recommend a tandem jump course as your first one. Its very safe and you will be with a qualified instructor.

What is parachuting with no parachute called?

Parachuting without a parachute is often referred to as "wingsuit flying," particularly when the individual uses a wingsuit to glide through the air before landing. However, if someone jumps from a height without any equipment, it is simply called a "free fall," which is extremely dangerous and generally results in severe injury or death. In some extreme sports contexts, it may also be referred to as "base jumping," but this typically involves a parachute.
