When a teen is severely delinquent and troubled, parents may take drastic measures to try to get their teen back on the right path. For some parents, that measure is a camp for troubled teens, generally known as a boot camp. Originally, the name boot camp referred exclusively to military recruit training camps run by the United States Marines Corps. Private institutions generally run boot camps for troubled teens in the United States. These boot camps are based on shock incarceration – short-term imprisonment – and military techniques. Boot camps claim that through their programs, they can scare of shock kids back onto the straight and narrow path. Generally, parents, not judges, are the ones who decide to send their teens to these camps. The teens do not have a choice in the matter – a parent can override a teen’s wishes and send them against their will. Frequently a teen will go to a boot camp as part of a plea bargain in exchange for avoiding prison trim or probation.

Boot camps are controversial due to their methods, which are frequently cited to be abusive, and the number of teens who have died in such programs, allegedly due to mistreatment, abuse or neglect. One report claims that over 30 teens have died in United States boot camps since 1980. Many of these deaths were high profile, leading to major lawsuits and laws being passed. For example, in 2006 a fourteen-year-old boy named Martin Anderson died in a boot camp. His death occurred after he was forced by guard to continue exercising after collapsing. When he became unresponsive, guards stuck ammonia capsules up his nostrils in an attempt to rouse him. Instead of rousing him, this lead to Anderson suffocating. He died the next day at a hospital after being taken off of life support.

Although cases like Anderson’s receive a lot of attention and criticism, many parents and officials still support boot camps and credit them with keeping their teenagers away from drugs and violence and helping them back onto the right path. Many of these parents feel that their teen was so far gone that less extreme methods would not have an effect.
