Current thinking is that abuse is learned behavior.

For the purpose of trying to understand misbehavior in the human gender doctors/scientistics would like to blame abusive behavior on "learned behavior" within the family fold. This does not explain the other 1/3 that have had no abuse in their family. Now scientists are looking at genetic mishaps in the human brain.

Certainly if one can be born with Diabetes, lack of appendages, and other maladies of the body why not genetic problems of the brain. After all, our brain is like a large circuit board (sort of like on a main electrical circuit board in a building) and thus, at least one of these lines could be short circuiting.

For the most percentage of abusive people it is learned behavior, but now scientists feel they will, in the future be able to control this behavior in not only abusive minds, but criminal minds. Sounds wonderful, but could we be opening a Pandora's Box?

Does ADHD cause someone to be 'emotionally abusive'?

It can. People with ADD don't usually have the social skills that most have. They say things without thinking which is sometimes hurtful. When they are children they don't do this intentionally, however, because of peoples anger toward them for such comments and often being accused of deliberately hurting people some will just say the hell with it and not care anymore or begin deliberately doing it. People with ADD are more likely to be abused and so they themselves are more likely to become abusive. We learn to treat others from the way we have been treated. ADD does not automatically cause someone to be emotionally abusive and not all ADD people are abusive but people with the disorder are more likely then average to be abusive both emotionally and physically.

If a person abuses another will they do it again?

The best predictor of the future is the past, especially when it comes to abusive people. If someone has abusive habits or inclinations, they will most likely continue to have those traits. This is not to say that some abusers cannot change, because it is possible, but usually only with major intervention. So for most cases, abusive people usually continue to be abusive.
