He shouldn't even try. There are two things you need to get a six pack, whopping great muscles and almost on subcutaneous(under the skin) fat. Just about every one who are ready to do a ridiculous amount of situps and crunches every day can get the muscles, but shedding body fat to the point where abs becomes clearly visible isn't healthy, particularly not for one who's still growing. Your body should have a certain amount of body fat, it's your insulation, your padding and your energy reserve. Getting rid of that will lower your energy levels and make you more prone to getting sick. Spend that effort on being nice and attentive to the person you like instead. I promise it'll pay off better.
