In New Jersey, there is no specific law stating the minimum age at which a child can be left home alone. However, the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency advises that children under the age of 13 should not be left alone for extended periods, especially overnight. A 9-year-old boy would generally not be considered mature enough to be left alone at night due to safety concerns and the potential for emergencies. It's important for parents to assess their child's maturity level and the safety of their environment before making such decisions.
At 11 Years Old they can be left alone if they're from a married couple. At 12 if they're a girl alone from a non married couple. 13 for a boy if they're alone from a non married couple.
"Boy, why am I alone?"

That depends on the environment, surroundings and the maturity of the 10 year old. As a parent I would feel a little uncomfortable allowing my 10 year old to go to school alone.
