There are many different types of punishment. Time out is a punishment that works very well with young children and it teaches them that they need to follow directions. Severe punishment only teaches a child to hurt others when they are unhappy and that is a huge disadvantage. The answer to your question that it depends on the child, the punishment, and the reason. For instance, a child not eating dinner but wanting cake instead the punishment is that they must eat dinner first. In this case there is a "natural" consequence and that is they get hungry eventually. When they do they get the dinner hot or cold and then can have the cake after they eat. Natural consequences are very good punishments because they make sense. Draw on the wall, clean the wall would be another natural consequence.
