This is a tough question as psychology, although useful as to the insight of the human experience, is considered a 'soft' science.

Your biggest problem is the lack of information on each individual however, it is a common mind frame, brought on by the romanticism in the media, that every man/woman can be changed (or 'shown the light') by a hopeful partner.

Sadly, the psychology of this situation as stated says he/she will say many things to promote himself/herself, but they will not change. It's just talk.

There are many reasons behind abusive behaviorism, especially physical and mental abusives, often stemming from their childhood. Without help from a trained, credible and learned source (group therapy, individual counseling) the person in question will have a hard time recognizing their own problems and not be able to rectify it.
