One-to-one correspondence is the ability to point to objects or words one at a time and is necessary pre-reading skill. Children need to know that sentences in English run from the left to the right and be able to point to one word and say it at the same time.

Another example is making a pattern of say plastic bears which is the same as the card underneath it - the bears are placed on the card in the same position and you have to match one-to-one the colour and size of each bear with the one on the card. Another example would be asking a question with pictures and asking are there enough cakes for each child to have one and there are five cakes and six children and children have to work it out or sharing out lollies/chips from a bag - one for you and one for you.
