No
(you kick him/her ass) <-- Uhh NO! You can explain how important that promise meant to you. If they can't keep a promise, then don't tell them the promise, tell someone that you can trust.

"I promise I have told you the truth about my whereabouts that evening," said the narrator, avoiding eye contact.

In the story "Father's Help," the teacher's promise is to provide a second chance to the narrator by allowing him to retake a failed test if his father helps build the school fence. This promise serves as motivation for the narrator to seek his father's support and take responsibility for his actions. It highlights the teacher's belief in redemption and the power of familial support.
I would say it is when Mangan's Sister and the narrator first talk, as before that happens, the story is just describing the narrator's every day life as seen when he says "This happened morning after morning. Unless she has told you she's lost her feelings for you then you are simply second-guessing and this is where communication comes in. If she has said this then I have no idea why you would offer her the promise ring. There appears to be a bigger problem here that you haven't mentioned and I believe it has something to do with commitment and marriage. I don't believe in promise rings (promise to what?) ... you are either engaged or you aren't. Sounds like she would be more delighted with an engagement ring. You'll have to figure this one out. Personally, if I was young again I wouldn't take a promise ring and expect the real thing!
