How can you get through an embarrassing rumor?

Ok.. well first of all.. say someone spread a rumor you were going out with this guy.. but your clearly not... but you like them.. well then they're probably most likely jealous of you.. find out why.. and who spread it.. and then ask some questions never leave yourself hanging on the edge. Always ask questions because that's what it's about.

Like the first person said, find out who started the rumor. Once you find out ask why she did and ask her to stop. Read carefully......If she does not stop, DO NOTspread rumors back, it causes more mess and more drama. Just tell the teacher. You're not tattle telling, you're stopping a problem. When you tell, most likely, things won't get worse 95% of the time.

It always hard to be in this position as regardless of what you say the damage has been done and people will believe what they want. All you can do is voice your feelings and truth to whom you want and/or in a way that will allow people to know your side. Be careful of whom you trust and befriend. Unfortunately people can be cruel and jealous which leads to situations like this as they are setting out the hurt you and your reputation for whatever selfish reasons they have such as a boy/girl, jealous in general of you or just plain bullying. Try to ignore what is going on, move on and don't let it bother you. I realize it sounds easier said then done but people are looking for a reaction and if they see that you are not letting it bother you they are not getting what they want and you are not giving in to them - don't let such petty people get the better of you - they are just not worth it. Go about what you normally do and things will blow over and get better with time. In the meanwhile try to casually distance yourself from individuals that are harmful to you.

Yes, the person above me is definitely right. What really ticks me off is when people give you dirty looks and they just stay away from you. Its almost like there's a huge plastic bubble around you that no one wants to touch. The individuals who are spreading rumors are probably people who are un-confident and they have nothing better to do with their life than make other people feel bad. Don't let these people ruin your life. Right, keep your distance. If other people have heard this horrible rumor, and they believe it just because of someone telling them with no proof, then they are just as un-confident as the people spreading the rumor. If the rumor hasn't spread too far, befriend the people who you know haven't heard. Once the rumor gets to them, and if what your personality has been like so far is completely the opposite, then they shouldn't believe the rumor.

And yes, like the person above me said, it will pass. These people will definitely not get as far as you in their lives, and one day, they might be regretting how they treated you.

1. 1Never say "no comment". Rumors thrive in environments of uncertainty, and an ambiguous statement only fuels the fire. Don't play dumb, or pretend that you don't know what people are implying. Also, becoming defensive, depressed, or irritated will validate the rumor in most people's minds.[2]
2. 2Don't confuse taking a stand for integrity with 'being defensive'. Since silence is not always so golden, it is good to have some things you can be prepared to say: "I do not believe that is true." or "This appears to be an unfounded (or vicious) rumor. Such things can do a lot of harm." Look them in the eye, when you say that.
3. 3Determine what lends credibility to the rumor, and stop it. People are more likely to tell rumors that are plausible, and that hinge on the existence of suggestive evidence. For instance, a rumor about a workplace affair will take off if the two people involved flirt in the office, or sit together every day at lunch. Once you determine what is feeding the rumor, take steps to remove it, if you can.[3] Don't bother thinking "Well they shouldn't assume that" or "I should be able to do what I want without them thinking such and such." The point is, they do, and as long as you continue the behavior, the rumor will continue to spread.
4. 4If you have credible evidence to the contrary, state "That simply cannot be true because...." and keep it simple.
5. 5Broadcast the rumor. Yes, that's right. Verbalize or post the rumor in a prominent way. By acknowledging the rumor, you're taking away some of its momentum. Rumors spread like wildfire because the people who spread them do so in order to gain social status, and that depends on them having the "inside scoop." If you broadcast their "inside information" then they won't have any motivation to spread the rumor. Everybody will already know!
6. 6Address the rumor-mongering comprehensively. Explain why the rumor exists, and who is benefiting from it. Then, create a new truth. Rumor specialists call this "stealing thunder" and if it's done early enough, it can stop a rumor in its tracks. The ideal situation is to introduce a new, rumor-worthy piece of information; one that people will gossip over, but which you have a lot more control over. Let's take the example of a celebrity who has rumors flying around about an affair; one way they can "steal the thunder" is by following all the steps above, then following up with the suggestion that the celebrity couple is trying to conceive a child.
7. If you do work out who has started the rumor it is best to avoid a harsh confrontation with them. If they have based it on something you told them and blown it out of all proportion then you should avoid talking to them about private affairs in future but remain civil with them, as conflict with them will cause the rumor to spread further.

Scientific research is suggesting that the old adage - "Don't dignify a rumor with a response" - is bad advice. The way rumors were handled in the most recent American elections seems to back up this new perspective.[1] So if you can't ignore the rumors, what are you supposed to do?

you find out who started the rumors first. then confront them. But at the same time dont let it bother it eventually gets old or a new starts about another person. stay strong dont let get to you. Another thing you can do is not participate in spreading rumors. Standard rule is to not believe anything you hear and only half of what you see, when it comes to rumors.

i had this rumour going round about me that me and my ex-boyfriend had anal sex. i laughed about it SO much and now everyone has forgotten about it =]. this doesn't always work, but most of the time, if you can have a laugh about it, it usually gets forgotten quite quickly.
