If you do the opposite and follow him around constantly, you're just going to get his attention by some form of sympathy, rather than genuine desire.

He needs to want you again based on what he can see himself, not what you how him. That makes him feel in control os his own emotions and destiny, feeding into the power complex of the male ego.
