Since an elderly person is changing in their body. It breaks down over time and they are not able to do so much anymore. Therefore depend on there family to take care of them, just how one day they took care of you when you were small and incapable of doing a lot.

Each family has their own way of dealing with the situation. Very seldom are both spouses alive when an elderly person needs help looking after themselves. A lot also depends on how intact the elderly person's mental capacity may be. When a parent is kept at home (either their own or with another family member), it can be a drain on the energy of the caretaker and sometimes on the family's financial resources. It is extremely difficult emotionally to place a family member in an institutional setting but can sometimes be necessary when the physical demands of care are beyond the family members strength or skill. The more incapacity of the elderly, the more strain there is on the family.
