I have a suggestion for you. Why don't you get a group of 3-4 friends together (boys/girls) and include him. Make a group date to go to a movie and eat at the mall after. This way you can get to know him without the pressure of a one to one date and if he doesn't want to go you won't be embarrassed because he was just one of the "group". If he is interested he'll go and you can ask him later over to your place for popcorn and a DVD movie. Be "cool" about this and you could send out an text to everyone for your group date.
