How do you casually ask a guy if he's in a relationship?

Depends a lot on why you're asking...I think the best way to ask is, "Are you seeing anyone?" If he asks why, you could try being honest about why you're asking...

What Im going to do (Because im also going to do the same thing) is say Im taking a survey for yearbook and ask him if he has a sister (which is what i am not sure of if the girl is his sister or girlfriend)Thats what im going to do.

You can first go about striking up friendly conversation building up to asking. Make sure you'll have enough time to this this so you don't have to just right away ask, "Do you have a girlfriend!?".

Once you feel you've talked, even for a little while and there is an opening, you could go about saying, "So, I hope I'm not being too forward with you, but I was curious if you're in a relationship. I'm really interested in you, but if you already have someone, I want to respect that [by not making inappropriate advances on you]." You should make sure to show emotion when inquiring so that he knows you're trying to be friendly and not forceful or nosey.

You can do it a couple ways. If you prefer to do it subtly, try slipping it casually into your conversation. Make a statement like "You should see that new movie with your girlfriend!" See if he corrects you. Another way is to ask naturally when it makes sense. Invite him somewhere and pause. Ask him if he has a girlfriend. If he says yes, you could invite her. If he says no you're all clear :) Or you could just ask him straight out. A simple "Are you dating anybody?" or "Do you have a girlfriend?" will give you the information and give him the signal you're definitely into him :)

literally just come out with it, there's no shame in wanting to know, and just asking doesn't give him the impression there are any underlying intentions or anything.
