The usual cliche is "there's plenty more fish in the sea." This is an attempt to put things into perspective: it's the end of a relationship not the end of the world. Of course,you do not have to cheer him/her up. You could assume that they will be miserable for some time, and then gradually their morale will improve. Distraction can be helpful; what else do they enjoy? Activity is a useful antidote because it stops people from obsessing.

I think the best thing you can do is just be there for them. Talk to them about whatever they want to talk about, offer words of comfort but don't say anything about moving on or anything like that because that just upsets them more. Be a friend because that all they really need.
