Well, you're not going in there to get a lip piercing or an STD, are you? Tell them you're just as scared as they are about the people in there and will only talk to the shopkeepers. Tell them you're just going in to get a band T or a Harry Potter shirt, or whatever you're getting, nothing stupid. They'll warm up eventually. My parents don't go in there, but they give me $5o to go in and buy stuff while they wait at the pretzel stand next door.
