Answering as a parent I would say if you have many responsibilities around the house, be sure they are getting done without your parents nagging at you before you ask. Parents hate being the bad guy as bad as you hate hearing them nagging at you. If you don't have any responsibilities, tell your parents you would like an allowance but you would like to do something for it. Ask what would help them out the most. Most parents are a lot more likely to want to help you out if you are acting responsibly.
