If a person treats others in a way they themselves would find hurtful, they are being deliberately cruel.
However, if a person treats others in a way they themselves would find hurtful, but are doing so because of their own intolerance towards that person, this is perhaps better referred to as bigotry.
So, a person might be deliberately unpleasant to someone they consider inferior or unequal to themselves, whether it be someone of another race, religious belief, different socio-economic status, or simply someone who likes music they themselves dislike, or who dresses in a way they disapprove of.
These are all forms of bigotry; you could express it by saying:
'They behaved very rudely towards a poor family they met in church simply because of bigotry.' or, 'They think all single parents are losers, just out of bigotry.'
Bigotry covers racism, sexism, and all the other names for the illogical fear, strong dislike, or even hatred, of those whom the bigot perceives as different in an unpleasant way from the bigot.
Bigots will frequently go to some trouble to look for excuses to explain their dislike of others, and are easily led to believe false or twisted facts if these suit their prejudices. They have a need to convince others to follow their own beliefs and can become angry when another person disagrees with those beliefs.
Xenophobia is a pathological form of bigotry and, when focused, can become a dangerous obsession.
