The Yaqui tribe is widely disperse. Originally in pre-columbian times, the Yaqui people occupied a vast territory. The presence of Yaqui in the state of Arizona is known as early as 400 AD. Majority of the Yaqui people lived along the fertile banks of the Yaqui River in present day Sonora, Mexico, in 8 sacred villages still occupied to this day: Vicam, Potam, Bacum, Torim, Rahum, Huirivis, Cocoim (Cocorit), Belen (now called Pitahya).
