Yes -the element of surprise, my friend! One of my friends was visiting his local desert area with a friend and his friend's (city-bred) dog: My friend saw a LARGE jackrabbit, frozen in place, as the dog approached. Then the dog saw the rabbit and moved closer to investigate. Suddenly, there was a cloud of dust! The dog was running back to his human and the rabbit was bounding away, pretty quickly. Unfortunately, it is impolite to laugh at the dog when the dog can hear you, but my friend always gets a chuckle out of relating the story. Rabbits have been known to scare many animals when they give their warning thump of the foot. Rabbits can and will kill intruding rabbits and I have seen them give a cat a sound thrashing and scare a chihuahua back to it's owner.
