Everything has changed for them.Their lives are disrupted.

Their lives have become unstable. They fear what will happen to them without both parents in the home to care for them. Some think the break up is their fault. There is no more "family" time with both parents present: trips, vacations, parties, school functions, sports, etc. There isn't enough money to go around. They don't see enough of the non-custodial parent. The custodial parent probably needs to work more, worry more about family finances and has less time to spend with the kids. Home life is more stressful as a result. In some cases they become the victims of bullying at school.

They worry when their parents can't get along with each other and any discussions end in a fight. Some bitter, immature, self-centered parents play the children against one another or try to alienate the child against the other parent. That can destroy family relationships forever. In many cases children are uncomfortable with sharing their parents with new partners that may come and go. Visitations can be a problem when there's a new spouse or partner who the children do not know well or even like.

What is the feeling of the children when the parents divorce?

They sometimes feel left out, depressed and sad since they sometimes don't know what is happening or simply because they cannot get their parents back together.A bit more:Much of it depends on how the parents handle the divorce. If they keep the kids out of their fights, don't use the kids as weapons or bartering tools, and do all they can to help the children through such a difficult time, the children will deal with the divorce much better.Divorce is extremely hard on a married couple, but it's just as difficult on the children. The parents will most likely get remarried eventually, but the kids can't go out and "fall in love" with new parents. They have to make the best of a bad situation, quite often with the parents not realizing the pain and confusion they are going through. But if the parents will make a conscious effort to keep their anger and resentments from the kids, and make sure the kids get to spend a lot of time with both parents, the children will fare much better during and after the divorce.

Children should NOT feel guilty about divorce because divorce results from problems between parents?

Sometimes even the best of relationships fall apart. While the pressure is felt by all family members, children should not feel guilty about divorce. Divorce results from problems between parents. Children should not be required to take sides between parents.

Should you be sad that your parents are getting a divorce?

You need to decide for yourself how you feel about your parents' divorce. You are entitled to your own feelings and no one else has the right to take them from you. If a parent says, "Do not be sad because I am not." That parent is wrong. The way that parent feels has nothing to do with the way you feel. You still love your parents, but you are a separate person. If someone says, "It is a shame your parents are getting a divorce, you should feel sad," that person has no right to tell you how to feel. Your parents may have been fighting for years. You may be glad the horror is over. Some people are sad when their parents get a divorce; some people are relieved.
