Historically, females were viewed as property, owned by the father or husband. As property, female children were part of trade and buying, in exchanges of land deals and barters between men. As such, selling or giving young girls to marry started in ancient civilizations that also used slave bondage.

However, today, child marriage in most developed countries has been outlawed. It should be outlawed in all cultures. Girls and women are not chattel to be traded, bought, or sold.
