How many women are abused?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, between 1998 and 2002:

• Of the almost 3.5 million violent crimes committed against family members, 49% of these were crimes against spouses.
• 84% of spouse abuse victims were females, and 86% of victims of dating partner abuse at were female.

According to the World Health Organization, between 1983 and 2010:

• 1/3 of women around the world are affected by domestic or sexual violence by their partner.
• Almost 40% of women killed were killed by their partners.

• There are no true statistics on how many women abusers there are in even in one country and certainly not in the world because abused men, children or the elderly seldom report that women abuse them. It was always thought for decades that females were the weaker sex and that men were the ones that inflicted verbal or physical abuse on women (80% of this is true) but, in the past 10 years or so it has become a fact that there are men who are also abused. Most men have been brought up to not hit a woman and thus they don't if their wife or girlfriend should hit them. The man is embarrassed and seldom will admit to family members or friends that this is happening and most do not seek psychological counseling for the problem. Now there are not only programs for Abused Women; child or the elderly, but programs for Abused Men.
