Im falling in love with my best friends ex-girlfriend what do I do if I dont want to hurt him?
Does she feel the same way about you ? If she does , you have to speak to him. Your saying your falling in love with her , but dont want to do anything incase it hurts him. If you dont do anything about it , if she also likes you then its hurting more people. Explain to him that you like her , but dont want to do anything because he is your friend. Probably because you came to him about it , rather than just making a move and not considering your feelings he will give you his blessing.

What you need to do is just ask your friend if it's ok with him for you to ask out his ex. If he says it's ok with him, ask her out. If he tell's you he's not comfortable with that, just be like, "ok, i that's why i asked-thanks for being honest"
From someone whose been there, definitely talk to him first. I did the opposite, pursued the girl, and hid it from him. After awhile it just killed me and I had to tell him. He was pissed and it took me completely cutting her out of my life and a lot of apologizing for him to forgive me. If you're up front about it, it will atleast give you his perspective and he'll know you respect him, whatever you decide to do.
