Most people wouldn't like that certain response. Adults of a certain age wouldn't like it but people of your age will not really trip about you answering "what" to them i mean i do it all the time to my family and piers. I just depends on who you are talking to. If you know that person really well and you know that that person is really picky about manners it is better to say"Exscuse me or "Can you repeat what you said again or you may also try Pardon or repeat please or will you please repeat or if you answer and that is not what they asked you may say "I must have misunderstood you but if you say it again I will be able to answer correctly."
