theres no reason for it to be weird, if you dont feel comfortable buying him a gift then treat him by taking him to the cinema or ice skating or something instead and pay for him to go :)

I think it's sweet of you to have gone to the trouble of buying her a gift. You really don't have to explain why you gave her the gift. When you give her the gift just ask her out.
