The term "counterculture" was introduced in the 1960's and relates to the anti-war movement at the time. While the main issue was the Vietnamese War, people also included a lot of other issues, since it seemed that if you can question the national military strategy, you might as well question everything else that you don't like about the national culture at the same time, so there was a lot of smoking of marijuana, a lot of sexual promiscuity, and various other aspects of what was known as the hippie lifestyle. One example of a countercultural group was the Youth International Party, also known as the Yippies. Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin were the main leaders of that particular group. They are both currently deceased.
