It was a rough one. Lydgate believed that his reforms would make the world and Middlemarch a better place but that ends him in debt. Since Rosamond is a beautiful and materialistic women, isn't happy with the little money that Lydgate makes from his practices. They fight and hate each other and get in each others way. He ends up dying and Rosamond marries another guy who fulfills her wishes with materialistic things.
