Like others pasts we have been in relationships that haven't worked and move forward as he is doing - I do realize there was a marriage with this but so have there been with many others. Just because he has been married and divorced in the past may not mean that he will not consider this in the future if he finds a woman that he wishes to do so with. If you like this person and want to be with him then do so with and open mind and take things from there - you cannot expect such a commitment nor think there won't be one in the future as you just don't know and you don't know if you don't try.
