Those who do not like to discuss politics are typically invested in their own political belief system and do not want to consider the other side of the argument.

For example, a liberal may not want to discuss politics because he or she does not want to acknowledge that everything that the government provides to people ultimately comes from the taxes that are collected.

A conservative may not want to discuss politics because he or she might not want to acknowledge that society may benefit when government agencies provide assistance.

Discussing politics helps people recognize when either side becomes too extreme. There is a balance between the political philosophies that is not easily attained. Extreme taxation shuts down industry and too many entitlement programs reduce the motivation to provide for ourselves.

Too little government involvement results in lawlessness and more crime, and ultimately more individual suffering.

Tell your friend who doesn't like to discuss politics that he or she should read political books that challenge his or her attitudes. Political apathy or rigid political thoughts are counter-productive and end up being the cause for election of inept politicians.

A psychology professor once pointed out that political outcome can quite accurately be predicted based on who has the better smile. If that's the case, our election process is little more than selecting the homecoming queen.
