Patriarchal?
In a patriarchal family, when the father dies, typically the eldest son or another male relative assumes the role of the head of the family. This transition often involves taking on responsibilities related to decision-making, financial support, and maintaining family traditions. The specifics can vary based on cultural norms and individual family dynamics, but the shift generally reinforces the established patriarchal structure.
The father is usually the head of the family in Mexico -- i.e. Mexico is a patriarchal society.
Patriarch - father. Matriarch - mother. Let's give an example: John and Betty are the parents of Mitch Longley. Mitch's patriarchal family consists of family members on his father's side. Mitch's matriarchal family are the family members from his mother's side. In another sense, a patriarchal family is ruled by the father-husband who makes all the decisions and whose authority is not questioned. A matriarchal family is ruled by the mother-wife who makes all the decisions and whose authority is not questioned.
The view that it no longer makes sense to talk about the patriarchal family is based on the observation that family structures have diversified significantly in contemporary society. With the rise of single-parent households, same-sex partnerships, and egalitarian relationships, traditional notions of a male-dominated family model are increasingly seen as outdated. Additionally, changing gender roles and expectations have led to more equal sharing of responsibilities within families, further challenging the relevance of the patriarchal framework. This perspective advocates for recognizing the complexity and variety of modern family dynamics rather than adhering to a singular, patriarchal narrative.
yeah the patriarchal family still exists because men still dominate many aspects of life. but looking at different studies, you can see that it is slowly becoming more uncommon as more women are going into employment. However, the patriarchal family still exists because women are still usually expected to carry out domestic duties and look after children. some people might argue that the patriarchal family doesn't exist because women have equal power to men, just in a different area of life (they dominate the home life). hope that helps and I'm not babbling on :) x
