For some reason people sometimes feel that they should have seen signs of their mate cheating on them, but that's why it's called 'cheating' because they are sneaking around behind your back.

I know your heart is breaking and you will go through a grieving period just as if you lost a loved one to death. In fact, you have lost someone ... you had loved each other, had fond memories together until they started to cheat. What you do should really depend upon a number of factors. The first question I would ask is, even though you still love him, can you trust him? If the answer is no, then eventually the relationship will fail, because how can you be with someone when you are constantly of the belief that they might betray you at any time? Is this something that was recurring, or was it a one time mistake? Did he admit it to you openly and without coercion because of guilt, or did you have to coerce it out of him? Did he apologize? Cheating also means a lot of different things to a lot of different people; sharing a kiss or a flirtation is probably not going to be as serious and damaging to your trust and therefore your relationship as having a full-blown relationship with another woman, maybe even one you know. Long story short, whatever the situation, if you cannot trust him anymore you should move on, even though you love him. It will be better for you in the long run, because instead of a long breakup where you two are constantly fighting and you slowly lose respect and begin to resent this person you love, you instead get to remember all the good times with the acknowledgement that you made the only healthy choice that could be made given the situation, and avoided future pain.

Now, if you decide that you can trust him again and you want to hold onto the relationship, you need to have clear boundaries. You need a promise that this will not happen again, and if it does, he needs to know you will not put up with it, even if you do love him. If it happens again he has destroyed the trust you extended him even when he didn't really deserve it, and there is no point in being with someone who would treat you that way. However, everyone makes mistakes and sometimes people cheat, and sometimes they can be forgiven and be truly sorry for their actions. I think someone who owns up to their mistake without you having to corner them is much more worthy of a second chance than someone who would let you find out through the grapevine. If you decide to really forgive him, you have to let go of all the pain and anger you may have, and not bring this forward with you. Don't forget it, but do not act like it is something to hold over him in daily life because it's not. If you really forgive him, then rebuild your relationship and eliminate anything that may have led him to cheat in the first place. Build it back stronger, sweeter, and more powerful for this stumbling block.
