You should not be making sarcastic remarks to lovers. Sarcasm is a hurtful sort of humor which should be reserved for people you don't like.
When a man "goes quiet" it usually means he does not want to talk - men are much more straight-forward than women and have a "fix the problem" attitude. They don't talk over things like women do, and if they don't know how to "fix" something they usually just get quiet and change the subject.
