The term is used mainly for relationships, extending the physical observation (magnetism) to social interaction. The premise is that a person would be attracted romantically to someone very different from themselves -- someone with characteristics they wanted or admired but did not have themselves. This would be a sort of "complementary relationship."

However, this can sometimes just be curiosity (how the other half lives), and a couple may find that not sharing common attributes and beliefs leads to friction and disagreements.
