well, the "concept" is that you formulate a hypothesis to test a theory, "using" the experimental method. it's actually not much different than what other scientists do, except that b/c you're working with people you have a whole host of potential problems you need to do your best to control or otherwise account for. there are two "types" of hypotheses: the null hypothesis says that there is no difference (between groups). the alternate hypothesis says that there is, in fact, a difference. you always assume the null is correct and use the experimental method to test the alternate hypothesis. if your results are strong enough, you can reject the null and say that there is a difference.
