If a man is totally into you and the people who you're close to don't like him, it's a big red flag. Ask them what it is that bothers them about the man and really give it some thought.
You've been in an abusive relationship before and abusive men are very good at picking out wounded &/or vulnerable women. They come on strong, fast and make you feel like you're the most wonderful woman in the world. They listen intently, but it's to find out what seduces you and what makes you upset so they can use it later. They want you all to themselves and want a lot of your time. They use the time, attention and closeness to start separating you from your friends and family. They talk about future plans together early in the relationship and often agree with whatever you say you'd like a relationship to be. They may not be controlling and possessive until later, but watch for any small sign. If you have any inkling that some of these things are going on, the seduction may make it really difficult for you to give them much credibility when you feel so good when you're with him, but beware. An important thing to check is whether or not he takes any responsibility for past or current problems in relationships or at work...or does he blame others? If he doesn't own up to his errors, mistakes and anger with others, he won't with you either.
I hope none of these things apply to the guy you're interested in, but if they do, HE WON'T STAY THE NICE GUY YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!
Good luck!

Instead of suing him file an complaint with the police and get a restraining order against him. Get some legal paper work on him for domestic violence and he can spend some time in jail cooling off.
