What if your dad doesn't like your boyfriend?

It probably isn't that big of a deal for now, and it might even be healthy. If he is scared of him, hopefully he will be really, really careful not to hurt you. If your boyfriend sticks around and you guys have a multi-year relationship or decide to get married, then you should get your boyfriend and your dad to spend some time together (without you) and get to know one another better so that they can work on that relationship. Maybe have them go golfing, or get them tickets to a sports game, or whatever they both like.

Well, some reasonable steps to take are:

1) Try to have your dad establish an understanding of why you love your boyfriend.

2) If he doesn't approve, have him talk to his parents.

3) If he doesn't or does but still doesn't approve, try to find some good qualities about him and proove them to your dad.

4) If he just doesn't like him period, but still lets you date him, don't worry about it, but try to show your dad that your boyfriend isn't bad.

5) See what mom thinks have have your parents talk.

IF your dad doesn't approve in anyway, do not:

1) Secret Date

2) Start arguments or fights

3) Hate your father

4) Move out

If you find no solution and your dad doesn't approve, then you'll have to tell your boyfriend that your dad doesn't approve of him, and that you'll have to look for someone else.

Before you do any of those steps, you should

0) find out what, specifically, your dad doesn't like about him. Never ignore the possibility that your dad may in fact be seeing his true personality more clearly than you are.

try to understand why he doesnt like him, see it from his point of view.... or look for things your boyfriend and your dad have in common, then get them together an let them talk the night away even if you end up late for you dinner date, its less stressfull and a win win situation.
