Bad things happening.

Answer:

"Evil" is a hard thing to define.

Some would say it is bad things happening but that requires a definition of what is "bad" and, when pressed, add that there has to be a malevolent purpose to make "bad" into "evil". As an example - falling into a well is bad, pushing someone into a well may be evil.

"Evil" is a moral judgment arising from a cultural set of standards. This gives rise to the thought that there aref "things that everyone knows are evil" which requires a knowledge of the context that the "everyone" is working in. As an example, most North Americans see cannibalism as evil, but some tribes in New Guinea eat parts of dead relatives to honour them.
