If you find yourself dealing with someone who has been defensive in response to your love and concern the first thing you should consider is that perhaps what you believed to be love and concern really isn't. There is such a thing as help as betrayal. We can often times believe we are helping someone when really all we are doing is betraying them. Once somebody has been the recipient of help as betrayal they can tend to be defensive about love and concern from others even when that love and concern is genuine. Showing love and concern for someone is not always the same as showing compassion. Sometimes the best way to show compassion is by silently being there for that person.
