What is the Song of roland about?

The "Song of Roland" is about King Charles', Charlemagne, attack on him from the rearguard while traveling through Spain. He is betrayed by Ganelon one of his men. The enemy of the story is another king named King Marsile. The victim of the story is Roland, King Charles' grandson. In the end of the song Roland is dead.

According to our tradition (and Rashi commentary), the Song of Songs is about the love between God and His people, in the poetic form of a loving young couple. Unlike all other Hebrew Bible books, it has no simple meaning and is to be explained, read and understood ONLY as an allegory. All other Tanakh books have their plain translation, which is valuable in itself, plus deeper meanings and allegory. The Song of Songs is the only exception.

Thinking of this song as erotic would be mistaken, because even in its non-allegorical meaning, genitals are never mentioned.

The Song of Solomon, or Song of Songs, is an erotic story of a suntanned woman who longs for her lover again. It is traditionally said that the woman is talking about King Solomon, but scholars say that the book was written much later as part of an operetta.

Verse 1:2 sets the scene for a poem about sensual love: “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.” The singer is portrayed as a farm girl and her lover as a shepherd and they make love on the grass beneath the trees (1:13: "... he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts... our bed is green the beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir.")

The scene changes in chapter 3, as she lies alone in bed at night and dreams of going about the streets looking for him, until the Watchmen see her. She dreams she finds him and wishes to bring him to her home to her mother. Through the eyes of her lover, we learn in chapter 4 how beautiful the female singer is and how earnestly he loves her. The last two lines are again from the girl, who invites him into her ‘garden’ to enjoy her fruits. He lover responds in 5:1 – “I have come to my garden,” calling her sister and spouse.

The girl wishes that he were her brother, so that she could kiss him in public without being teased, and they would be together in the home of her mother (8:1-2). In 8:8, she speaks of her young, prepubescent sister and wonders what will happen when it is her turn to fall in love. Now she has no breasts, but the singer’s breasts are like towers (8:10). In 8:11-12, she seems to compare her virtue to Solomon’s vineyard. Solomon sold his produce, but her vineyard is for her ‘Solomon’ to enjoy. Just come quickly, my lover.
