I'd start by asking, do you mean 'casual' relationship?

if so then most people consider a causual relationship to be a bit of fun, don't get too caught up in the other. (don't get too attached!)

Some might call it, "Friends with benefits" you have a sexual relationship with no strings attached... meaning its not gonna last forever, its just a fling!

Whereas a serious relationship involves two people who really want to be together, both care for each other and want more than just sex. a long term relationship with no messing around behind each others backs. Simples!

What is the difference between a promise and a covenant, and how do they each impact the commitments made between individuals or groups?

A promise is a commitment made by one person to another, while a covenant is a more formal and binding agreement between two parties. Promises are often based on trust and can be broken without severe consequences, whereas covenants are typically more serious and have legal or moral implications if broken. Covenants tend to have a stronger impact on the commitments made between individuals or groups because they are seen as more sacred and enduring.

For a guy a 'girlfriend' is someone he is serious about and is in a committed relationship and may or may not include a physical relationship depending on age of people etc. A 'lover' is generally not a committed relationship and is just a more elegant way of staying 'FWB' or 'F**k Buddy'!
